We see statistics all the time about the cost of fraud, the number of victims, the number of reports to law enforcement… it is all too easy to forget what the experience can be like for the victims. Sometimes our systems fail those who need protecting. In this panel debate we shall hear two very different stories from two victims of fraud. Additionally to contrast this, we also will hear from a social engineer and hacker on the experience of committing fraud.
Our Panellists:
Bennett Arron
Bennett, who supported Ricky Gervais on some of his tour dates, is a past winner of the TAPS Comedy Writer of the Year Award. His television work includes Big Brother’s Little Brother for Channel 4, The Kosher Comedian for the BBC and he hosted the comedy programme Glee Time for ITV. He has written for many comedy programmes, including The 11 O’ Clock Show, Commercial Breakdown and the BAFTA winning Graham Norton Show. He also wrote over 20 episodes of Genie in The House – the highest-rated children’s sitcom on Nickelodeon – and The Slammer for the BBC. He recently wrote and starred in two critically acclaimed radio series Bennett Arron is Jewelsh and Bennett Arron Worries About….
Bennett is also both a victim of, and an expert on, Identity Theft and was BAFTA shortlisted, and arrested(!), for his Channel 4 documentary How To Steal an Identity.
Jenny Radcliffe
Jenny Radcliffe – aka “The People Hacker” – is a force to be reckoned with. She can diffuse a crisis situation, talk her way into a secure building and spot a psychopath at a hundred paces. She has been called a mind reader and a ‘human lie detector’, and likened to a Jedi Knight.
In reality, she is an expert in Social Engineering (the human element of security), negotiations, non-verbal communication and deception, using her skills to help clients from corporations and law enforcement, to poker players, politicians and the security industry.
Jenny speaks, consults and trains people in the skills of “people hacking” and explains how “Social Engineering” using psychological methods can be a huge threat to organisations of all sizes. She reveals how that same knowledge is a valuable tool for security professionals of all types in the prevention of these attacks, scams and cons of all kinds.
A. Victim
In order to protect their identity, our second victim of fraud had an “interesting” experience involving a top tier bank and a global online market place. If you work for either of these organisations then please be prepared to be embarrassed (or pleased) as the customer service throughout this incident of fraud was nothing short of astonishing from one party, excellent from the other.
